EP. 10

The Hidden Source of Your Greatest Stress with Jae Ellard

I was sitting in a hotel conference room in Calgary Alberta a few years ago, watching a colleague of mine facilitate a section of a training workshop. It’s a program that both of us have delivered hundreds of times but it’s always wonderful watching someone do things differently than you do or say things that you’ve never thought of before.

Almost in passing, he made a comment to the packed audience of senior banking leaders about the hidden source of your #1 stressors (…I won’t say what that was just now…you’ll have to listen to today’s episode). I was half listening at the time but when he said that I perked up immediately and what he shared that day has stuck with me for years.

It wasn’t his original thought though, he gave full credit to a friend of his in Seattle, who has authored multiple books and given talks in dozens of countries on finding balance, developing greater self-awareness and understanding your stress.

“When you’re out of alignment with your values, you will feel stress”

“Is it stressful, or is it unpleasant?”

So it was with excitement that I reached out to Jae Ellard to have her as a featured guest on the podcast. Jae is the source of that tip my colleague gave that day. Jae has a compelling story that is all too common for achievers – that is everything is going great, until it suddenly isn’t. I’ll let Jae get into the details and how that changed her life’s journey towards a much greater mission and contribution to bettering people’s lives.

There are lots of great tips in this episode so be sure to capture anything you think can help improve your approach to finding happiness, managing stress and everything in between.

Enjoy the conversation…

What we cover in this episode:

  • How Jae’s life changed on a “hot summer’s night” and how your greatest growth can come out of your darkest moments
  • Why awareness is a skill and a discipline
  • We are not taught about stress and well-being in school or at home
  • The blindspots that leaders have in their awareness
  • The “grief” that is experienced in the modern working world
  • How avoiding conversations leads to greater stress
  • Why you need to pay attention to where you’re not paying attention
  • Your #1 hidden source of stress
  • How we bring stress on ourselves
  • The difference between “stressful” and “unpleasant”
  • The importance of asking 3 questions: What stresses me out? What conversations am I not having? How can I take care of myself when stressed?
  • You need to stop being afraid of asking for help

“You’ve got to pay attention to where you’re not paying attention”
